Get Me Another One

Get Me Another One Came while I was on storytelling tour of Newfoundland in 1988.

I was riding out to a little town called Rocky Harbour and the librarian said, "Do you have any stories about fish? They would like a fish story in Rocky Harbour."

Well, I didn't have any fish stories, but I started thinking fast, but by the time we got to the town I still didn't have a good idea for a fish story.

I told stories at a very crowded little library and right in front was a little girl with very long hair named Kristi.

At the end I decided to try a fish story and she volunteered to be in it. Get Me Another One was the story that came out.

I knew it was a good one so I got Kristi's name.

Much later, when I was looking for an artist for the book, I called up the same librarian who drove me to Rocky Harbour and asked if she knew anybody who could illustrate the story.

She recommended Sean Steffler from Corner Brook, and that is who ended up doing the pictures.

I have an unpublished story about Krista's brother called Where is Wilfred. Maybe it will be a book someday.

When Get Me Another One was published I had the book launching in Rocky Harbour. Kristi and I signed books and I told stories. The Rocky Harbour Public Library has a webb page about it.

When I was in Rocky Harbour for the book launching the librarian took Kristi (the kid in GET ME ANOTHER ONE) and her brother Wilfred and my dauther Tyya and I on a trip up the coast. Here is the TRUE STORY of part of that trip.

WHERE IS WILFRED

When everyone was standing on the beach Wilfred said "I can walk on trees".

"What do you mean?" said Bob, "Nobody can walk on trees.

"People walk on the ground."

"People walk on sidewalks."

"People walk on stairs."

"In the Bible it said Jesus walked on water, but even he never walked on trees".

"Jesus never lived in Newfoundland" said Wilfred, "And I can walk on trees".

"Alright" said Bob, "let me see you do it".

"Watch" said Wilfred, "it's easy. The sea wind makes the trees grow so tight and clumpy it is almost like walking on the ground. We call it Tuck".

Wilfred walked over to a big clump of tuck, ran right up on top just like it was a hill and stood there looking at Bob.

"Hhhhuummmm" said Bob, "amazing".

Than Bob went over, ran up to the top of the tuck, fell right through and ended up underneath with spiders and broken branches and dust and old pop bottles.

Wilfred helped pull him out.

"It's easy to walk on trees" said Wilfred, "but it helps if you grew up in Newfoundland. You still have to watch were you put your feet. Sometimes there are holes, especially when you are grown up and heavy.”

"Right" said Bob.

Then they walked out to a big rock on the beach.

"This is an enormous rock" said Bob.

"It's incredible" said Tyya.

"Where's Wilfred?" said Bob.

"He's on top" said Tyya.

"On top?" said Bob. And there was Wilfred very high on top of the rock.

"You're gonna get killed" yelled Bob.

"No" said Wilfred, "it's easy".

"I got to get that kid" said Bob. He started to climb up the rock, slipped, fell and clanged his head on the beach.

Wilfred came down and said "It's easy to climb on rocks, but it helps if you grew up in Newfoundland".

"Right" said Bob.

Then they walked up the beach to some sand dunes.

Tyya was looking at the sand dunes.

Bob was looking at the sand dunes.

Then Bob said "Where's Wilfred?"

"I don't know" said Tyya. "He said he was gonna go walk on trees".

"Not again" said Bob.

They climbed up on the top of the sand dunes and there was Wilfred, walking around really high up on top of the tuck.

"How are you going to get down?" said Bob.

"No sweat" said Wilfred, "it's easy". And he went higher and higher.

"How are you going to get down?" said Bob.

"No sweat" said Wilfred, "it's easy". And he went higher and higher.

"How are you going to get down?" said Bob.

"No sweat" said Wilfred, "you're gonna come get me. I'm stuck!"

"Oh no" said Bob. "I tried that once and it didn't work out very well. Come down yourself".

"I'm stuck", yelled Wilfred, "I'm stuck, I'm stuck. Call the police. Call the fire department. Call the army".

"Look" said Bob, "you've gotta get down by yourself."

"There is no police here."

"There is no fire department here."

"There is no army here".

So Wilfred sat on top of the tree and yelled and like a homesick elephant, which was very strange because there are no elephants in Newfoundland.

"Nuts!" said Bob.

So Bob started crawling very carefully up tuck till he was quite close to Wildfred, but Wilfred had jumped all the way out to where the tuck was clumps with holes in between. So Bob got close and yelled , "Wilfred, jump over here".

"I can't jump" said Wilfred, "I'm scared".

So Bob very carefully skipped over to the top of the tree that Wilfred was on and said "You've gotta climb down".

"I'm scared" said Wilfred.

So Bob sat down and he thought and he thought and he thought and then he said "I know what to do".

He stuck his feet onto the tree that Wilfred was on, jumped out and hung onto the next tree and made a bridge. He said to Wilfred, "Walk on top of me".

"I don't know" said Wilfred.

"People walk on sidewalks."

"People walk on the ground."

"People walk on stairs."

"It said in the Bible that Jesus walked on water, but even he never walked on people."

"Jesus never lived in Newfoundland", said Bob, "I'm your bridge. Walk on me".

So Wilfred walked across Bob to the next tree.

Then Bob made another bridge and Wilfred walked across him again.

Then Bob made another bridge and Wilfred walked across him again.

Then Bob made another bridge and Wilfred walked across him again.

Then Bob made another bridge and Wilfred ran over him to the solid tuck.

That is when Bob fell through the tuck all the way down through dead branches and spider webbs to the very bottom. It was a long way down, but happily the tuck was so thick that is was more like a slow fall through a very bumpy cactus than a regular fast fall.

Some time later Bob crawled out of the tuck. He was all covered with spider webs and his clothes were torn and he was dirty and bloody and there were spruce needles in his hair and clothes and spruce needles are very scratchy.

"Wow", said Wilfred, "I never walked on people before!"

"Kristi", said Bob, "Do you mind if we don't take Wilfred the next time we go on a trip?"

"You can't do that!" yelled Wilfred, "I just gave you a story!"

"Yes!" said Kristi, "He really did just give you a story!"

And he really did give me a story and this is it.
